✨ WHAT A MORNING! A LOOK INSIDE OUR FIRST IN-PERSON PARENT WORKSHOP ✨

Posted Date: 01/09/26 (03:09 PM)

This morning, Cicero District 99 welcomed families to a truly special BPAC (Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee) workshop focused on one powerful question:

"How can I support my child's English development?"

And wow — our parents showed up, leaned in, asked thoughtful questions, and left empowered.

Led but our Multilingual Department team, families spent the morning learning not just what the ACCESS test is, but why it matters and how it connects to their child's daily learning. Parents gained clarity on how English proficiency is assessed, how to read and understand ACCESS score reports, and how teachers use those results to design instruction and supports for students.

But this wasn't just a presentation — it was a conversation.

Parents practiced reading real score reports, learned what each ACCESS level means, and discovered how listening, speaking, reading, and writing all work together as children grow in a new language. Even more importantly, families were reassured of something many needed to hear:

You do not need to speak English to support your child's English development.

One of the most meaningful parts of the workshop was the focus on simple, real-life activities families can do at home — things many parents are already doing without realizing how powerful they are. From talking about pictures and telling stories, to reading together, writing notes, following directions, and even preparing snacks together, parents left with practical ideas they could use that same day.

The session, presented in Spanish to ensure full access and comfort for families, reflected what BPAC is all about: partnership, respect, and empowerment. Add in raffle prizes, refreshments, and a welcoming space to connect with other families, and the morning felt less like a meeting — and more like a community.

💛 To every parent who attended: thank you for showing up for your child. To our Multilingual Department team: thank you for making learning clear, welcoming, and meaningful.
If you missed this workshop, don't worry — this is just the beginning. Events like this are part of our ongoing commitment to supporting families every step of the way.

📣 Next time, come join us. You'll leave informed, encouraged, and reminded that what you do at home truly makes a difference.

We can't wait to see you at the next BPAC meeting!
