💙 FROM CLASSROOM TO THE COMMUNITY: UNITY JR. HIGH STUDENTS SHINE AT PRESIDENTS DAY CELEBRATION ❤️
What a powerful ways to honor Presidents Day — together.
Cicero District 99 was proud to join the Town of Cicero for a special Presidents Day celebration at Morton College, bringing students, educators, community members, and local leaders under one roof for a morning rooted in learning, reflection, and inspiration.
The highlight of the event came from two remarkable Unity Junior High students, Ana Fuentes Maldonado and Deyli Gonzaga Bahena, who courageously stepped up to the microphone and spoke in front of their classmates and dozens of community members — including Cicero Town President Larry Dominick. Their voices, confidence, and pride represented the very best of our schools and reminded everyone in attendance just how powerful student leadership can be.
The program also featured a thoughtful keynote address from Morton College history professor Dr. Michael D. Kasporwicz, who guided attendees through the importance of Presidents Day, the responsibilities of the presidency, and engaging deep dives into the lives and legacies of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln — along with fascinating presidential fun facts that brought history to life.
All of this came at a particularly meaningful moment, as we celebrate America's 250th birthday this year — a milestone that invites us to reflect on where we've been, who we are, and where we're going.
Events like this remind us that education doesn't stop at the classroom door. When schools, colleges, and local government come together, something special happens: students feel seen, history feels real, and community grows together.
We're incredibly proud of Ana and Deyli, grateful to our partners at Morton College and the Town of Cicero, and thankful to everyone who helped make this day so memorable. This is what community looks like — learning together, celebrating together, and lifting up the next generation of leaders.
