🧸 FROM VALENCIA TO CICERO: LAS FALLAS IS INSPIRING A NEW GENERATION AT GOODWIN 🪀

A piece of Valencia came to life right here in Cicero District 99!

Inside a kindergarten classroom at Goodwin Elementary, something magical was unfolding. Guided by teacher Gema Villarino, a proud native of Valencia, Spain, students learned and lived a cultural tradition.

Each year, Villarino brings Las Fallas to her classroom, a centuries-old Spanish festival known for its breathtaking artistic displays, storytelling, and powerful symbolism. Traditionally, communities in Valencia build intricate sculptures — called fallas — that celebrate creativity, culture, and reflection before being ceremoniously burned as a symbol of renewal.

But in her classroom, the flames weren't needed to spark something powerful.

This year's student-created falla, inspired by The Land of Toys, transformed simple, recycled materials into a vibrant world bursting with imagination. Cardboard, paper, and everyday objects became something more. Together, these young creators built not just a display, but a story.

And at the heart of that story? Messages that matter.

"In the land of dreams and freedom, toys teach us to love and to imagine."
"Playing together, we grow up free."

These are reflections of the values we champion every day across our District: cooperation, creativity, and personal expression.

What makes this moment so powerful is what this beautiful project represents. A classroom where culture connects, where imagination leads, and where even our youngest learners are reminded that their ideas, their voices, and their creativity have value.

This art project was a celebration of identity. A lesson in community. A glimpse into the limitless potential of our students.

And if you look closely, you'll see it too — The future, being built one idea at a time.
